BBC: “Endangered lace craft revived by young Londoners”

There is a Heritage Crafts organization in the UK that monitors the status of traditional skills and crafts, and does a report on their health. There’s nothing like this in the US, but I bet our situation is similar.

In 2025, they named bobbin lace to their “Red List” of endangered skills. A number of great young lacemakers in the UK has picked up that flag and run with it!

The BBC has now picked up on this and shows us what is working in London: Endangered lace craft revived by young Londoners.

The BBC covers the effort to get new lacemakers skilled-up in the UK.

It’s so inspiring to see the new interest in this craft and the success they are having with local workshops and “lace tasters”. They are getting media coverage and getting new people interested in lace and lacemaking.

We need this effort in the US as well. There are local groups around the US offering workshops and classes, but I don’t think our outreach is that effective. We have something to learn from the UK’s lacemakers.
