Adding an “Institution” to Wikimedia Commons

Black Chantilly lace fichu section; Auckland Museum, CC BY 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons

This project is pushing me into new parts of Wikipedia that I hadn’t even explored yet. I was discussing a piece of lace with someone that came from the Auckland Museum (see the image above).

I realized that they had an “Institution” designation for their “collection” on the image page, and wondered how to accomplish that. With a little searching, I found it.

You use the “Institutions” template here, just add what you can, and you have an Institution page. So when this institution starts to add images from their collection for this project, we can tag them appropriately.

That’s the thing about Wikipedia: there’s a lot of documentation and usually I can stumble into the right thing. And if I do it wrong, it’s all fixable. I’m not worried about breaking the whole thing. It’s really a tiny niche thing and can survive until a fix.
